Knowing.

Wow, I haven't blogged in forever.
But anyways, we've been discussing a lot about Art and Math and how Art may be a better way of expressing ideas.
This was a very interesting topic to me because I had not thought of Math in terms of Art, I'm very left-brained. I agree with it now though, especially because Art can help people understand extremely large numbers like five trillion, nine billion, two million, one hundred thousand, two hundred eighty-two. :p As well, Math and Science don't allow people to express their opinions and feelings as well as in Art both visual and in things like music.
On the other hand, in my opinion, Art doesn't allow us to express things sequentially and in things like the Scientific Method because it is only drawings and sounds, not so much words.
Hmm, well those are my thoughts at the moment so see you later! :)

Acceptable Lies?

Okay, I honestly can't remember what we talked about last class, so I've decided to talk about something that crossed my mind.
Society accepts certain lies, right? Like surprises or little 'white lies' that spare people's feelings. Why is this acceptable and should it be? The logical answer seems to be that it will make someone happy when they're surprised or it will avoid making someone upset if you don't tell them you don't like their new hair cut. But, where is the line crossed?
I really don't have an answer, I just wanted to put that out there. :) So buh-bye for now!

I totally agree with this quote because I think having a strong emotion and then experiencing certain things makes the person react differently. For example: If someone was really angry about something and then someone else made a sarcastic comment toward them, it may seem very insulting and they would react much differently than someone who was calm to begin with.
As well, a person's perspective would be different if they were in love as opposed to hating lots of people and being in a fight. One would think the world was great and the other would think the world was out to get them.

Umm...

So I have no idea what to write about. Oh okay, here's a thought. Someone mentioned in class something about how maybe the advancement of the human race should stop, or something of the sort. Anyhoo, I think that people are beginning to experiment and change things a little too much for my liking, what, with Global Warming and talk of Designer Babies I think it might be time we backed off of technology for awhile. Although don't get me wrong, advancements in medicine and such is really good but do we really have to try and change the human genome or play with nanotechnology..? Another positive aspect is that humans are trying to experiment to reverse the effects of what we've done but not everyone is so it's a really touchy issue.. Well yeah, that's about all I have to say for now so.. see ya! :)

Empericism vs. Rationalism

Okay, so I think I agree with rationalism because although the idea that all our perceptions could be wrong is very skeptic, I think it's plausible. Rene Descartes' idea that genuine knowledge IS possible but only through mathematically based scientific reasoning makes sense to me because everything in math can be easily proved. While trying to prove that the chair is actually red to someone else could be very difficult because we can't be sure we see what everyone else sees. I think everyone experiences things differently based on the fact that no two people are exactly alike-even if they're twins. If everyone experiences things differently then their perceptions could all be different. This would make Empericism wrong because it is solely based on the way we perceive things. It says if we gain knowledge through experience but if everyone experiences things in a different way it would mean that everyone could have different knowledge about the same subject; which doesn't make sense. So those are my thoughts... :) Au revoir!

Where does the world come from?

This was one of the questions that the philosopher asked Sophie in the beginning of Sophie's World. I had a lot of the same thoughts Sophie did when I read it but I thought I would share some..
First of all, I like and understand the idea that something can not come from nothing. So I would have to assume that there was something eternal. But that idea is really hard for me to grasp. Endlessness just seems so.. well long and not normal because I don't think about it on an everyday basis. On the other hand, no one can know for sure where the world came from. Sure, scientists have theories about a 'Big Bang' and such but there still had to be something to go 'bang'. :p Most religions give a belief of where the world came from. Like: God created the Earth and God is eternal so everything works out but again the whole eternal thing just blows my mind. To me, this is still the most logical and easiest to understand because nothing else explains the whole 'something can not come from nothing'. Anyhoodles... I have no idea if that makes sense or not but that's what I think. :) See y'all tomorrow. Bright and early! :p
