Acceptable Lies?

Okay, I honestly can't remember what we talked about last class, so I've decided to talk about something that crossed my mind.
Society accepts certain lies, right? Like surprises or little 'white lies' that spare people's feelings. Why is this acceptable and should it be? The logical answer seems to be that it will make someone happy when they're surprised or it will avoid making someone upset if you don't tell them you don't like their new hair cut. But, where is the line crossed?
I really don't have an answer, I just wanted to put that out there. :) So buh-bye for now!

  1. actually we recently had a debate similair to thiss in our frnech class and it was about whether of not it was right for parent to 'lie' to their children that there is the existance of Santa Clause. I, personnaly, believe it is all for fun and the children realize that when they find out the true facts about Santa Clause, yet whether is it contradictory to teach them not to lie and then tell them things exist when they do not is the problem we stumbled upon.
Whether there is a definate line that one can cross is sketchy since it is different in every occasion, too.

  2. Oh, yeah good point. Same with the tooth fairy and easter bunny. I've never really realized how many white lies parents tell their children, it's interesting. But I do agree that it's all for fun but it is sketchy as to whether or not they should because it's so hypocritical.
